mast brothers chocolate

I admit to being prone to developing what I think of as a “Craftsmanship Crush”, from time to time. I crush out on fiercely passionate, clever people who are really dedicated to their craft, right down to the last obsessive detail. My heart thumps when what is produced from that labor of love is something particularly special that soars above the rest. Much like the “Ghost Crush“, the CC doesn’t discriminate on basis of decade, gender, or even having a pulse, really. Products, books, art, fashion or music–as long as your ticker runs fast (or ran fast) for whatever you’re creating and I dig it, I dig you.

Case in point: The Mast Brothers. I love these guys. I first heard about the Brooklyn-based brothers was on the Cooking Channel during the Food(ography) Chocolate episode (watch HERE) and then, the very next day, Stumptown Coffee Roasters announced that Mast Brothers was the new chocolate that all of their coffee shops would now be using in mochas and cocoa drinks. Two of my favorite places in the world, Portland and Brooklyn, together as one–I love to see so many parallels between the two. The Mast Brothers’ dedication to quality is similar to that of Stumptown Coffee, it is no surprise that they found each other and mated.

I’ve had the mocha, but I haven’t had the pleasure of tasting a Mast Brothers chocolate bar yet. I am absolutely cuckoo for dark chocolate and I’d love to try all of them. The Serrano Chili Pepper, Almond, Sea Salt & Olive Oil, Stumptown Coffee Roasters and the Cocao Nibs bar, are most intriguing for me. Don’t they sound amazing?? I’m itching for a New York trip, but I might just have to see if a friend would be willing to send me a couple of those dreamy choco bars in the post.

I love this video (above) from The Scout. The Scout clearly experiences intense craftsmanship crush outs, because they have put together three of the most gorgeous profile videos. They are absolutely Errol Morris-esque! Check out their other two, one on Roman and Williams buildings and Interiors designers and one on Billykirk handmade leather goods.

  1. I saw these guys on The Selby a while back and was inspired! They really did everything right, I love all the detail they put into their work as well. And I’d love to open a brick and mortar shop of some sort someday and have it be as beautiful!
