Jean & Coco

These “la marinière” depictions of Jean Seberg in Breathless and a coy Coco Chanel by UK illustrator, Clare Owen, are so wonderful. I also love her perfect cat mask.

I found Jean Seberg’s grave in the Cimetière du Montparnasse by accident on my way to pay respects to Serge Gainsbourg and Man Ray a few years ago. The beautiful type used on her headstone and a small potted flower caught my eye. I knelt next to her for a while and it was moving how modest her plot was in comparison to those around her. It was so strange to sit there quietly, alone next to such an icon–I kept thinking there should still be paparazzi or something. I love a lot of Jean Seberg’s films and if you haven’t seen it, my favorite of all is Bonjour Tristesse.

See more of Clare Owen’s lovely work on Flickr and she has an Etsy shop as well!

Gorgeous illustrations – makes me want to channel that very outfit! And I have a whole new level of respect for you now that I know you paid respects to Man Ray while in Paris.

  2. Beautiful images! I have never seen Bonjour Tristesse, will have to check it out.

Ronit – Oh dear. You have no idea. The surrealists restored my faith in humanity from Junior High on… I owe a lot to Man Ray, Kiki de Montparnasse, Lee Miller and crew. I bawled my face off when I finally found him… very melodramatic.

Lisa – You need to see it!
