Nights of Cabiria

I’ve been trying to sort out some things that I’d like to talk about more here on Honey Kennedy. One thing that I keep coming back to is my love for film! I have a pretty nerdy side when it comes to old movies and Hollywood silver screen scandal. I was obsessed with the glamor as a wee one (shocker!) and pored over the classics like a tiny footlight parade junkie.

I thought maybe I could share some recommendations of movies that have made a big impression on me over the years. I feel like some of these films are intricately woven into the fabric of my character because I have held them so close to my heart for so long! I don’t want to summarize these films because I don’t want to give anything away. If you watch them or love them too–I’d love to hear about it.

I love Federico Fellini and I love his wife, actress Giulietta Masina. Her portrayal of the character “Cabiria” in his film, Nights of Cabiria (Le Notti di Cabiria), is amazingly inspiring. Everyone in this film is incredible and the every detail is a dream. Some other Fellini/Masina movies I love: Juliet of the Spirits and La Strada. Masina isn’t in it, but I love Fellini’s La Dolce Vita too!

If you love film scores (like some nerds might–ahem), I recommend the scores for Nights of Cabiria and La Dolce Vita. Both scores are by incredible Italian composer and dear friend to Federico and Giulietta, Nino Rota.

Here are some lovely screen captures from Nights of Cabiria (((♥)))

Yes! Film recs from Jen! I’ve always had a hard time getting into older films, but they can be so inspiring. I’ll give both of these a try – I’m almost embarrassed to say I’ve yet to see La Dolce Vita!

I first saw Giulietta Masina in “La Strada” while I was in high school, and have just loved her ever since. I’d never seen anyone like her on screen before. Her face is so expressive and unique.

It’s nice to know that I wasn’t the only nerdy old movie lover as a kid. I remember my friends swooning over Leonardo diCaprio, and I was all “No way – have you even seen Gregory Peck?”

Me too, Liza! In addition to a bunch of leading men in film, I had a weird crush on Paul Drake from Perry Mason when I was little.Ha! YAY. Glad I’m not alone.

Yes! I would absolutely love your film recommendations – in fact I’m looking for the film on Netflix right after commenting. I love older films but always feel a little lost about what to watch besides the obvious ones. I’m so excited – Thanks!
