I just adore these photos of Dorothy Sebastian in the late 1920s. Of course, I love the stripes, but that giant sunhat is probably what my ghostly pale skin needs!

Love the more conservative swimsuits from this era–wonder if they sell this sort of style anymore?
And that hat–I’ve never seen anything like it!
They are made of wool. Not exactly the most comfortable thing to wear, especially when wet!
Well, I don’t know that they were uncomfortable so much as saggy once wet for a couple hours! Ha. Just so awkward.
Itchy. This was not cashmere quality wool. This was the scratchy stuff. We have a few in the historic fashion collection I manage and while they are cool to look at, I do not envy the women who wore them!
That would be hard! I guess the ones I’ve seen over the years when I was working in antique shops were partially strategically lined with cotton.
I would question whether that lining was original. I just double checked and none of the ones in our collection are lined. Not saying it didn’t happen at all, but it would have been rare if the lining you saw was original.
I love the way they put lipstick on back then, I must start trying that.
Do!
I love these old photos. I’m lucky enough to have some photos of my great grandmother lounging in her swimsuit with her glam friends at the beach.
A lot more classy than a string bikini!

That’s the best–I love finding those photographs. Way more lovely than a string bikini!
