Dame Maggie

I was talking to some friends last week about how I don’t want to imagine a world without Maggie Smith in it. I cannot count the number of times she has made me smile or ignited a giggle fit since I first saw her in A Room With A View when I was a kid (still a favorite!). Now I’ve suddenly realized that she has so many performances that I have never seen and I’m certainly not doing myself any favors by staying in the dark. Another resolution for New Year–WATCH MORE MAGGIE SMITH! Does anyone have any favorites? I’d love suggestions!

I love these photos of Dame Maggie Smith from her performance in a 1972 BBC Play of the Month, The Millionairess, by George Bernard Shaw. I’ve seen the 1960 version with Sophia Loren, but didn’t realize Smith had filmed a version as well. It looks like The Millionairess is available to watch on YouTube in 11 parts, but the poor quality would drive me bananas. I think I might check the local video stores and local library first–or splurge on the DVD!

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie !!

RWAV is one of my faves, too. XD

  2. Heather says:

Fabulous pictures! I was just discussing with a friend that it seems like Maggie Smith has been old forever.(like, didn’t she seem old in Hook??) But you’ve just opened my eyes to a Maggie Smith I never knew.

I just did the math, and Maggie Smith was 37-38 when she was in the Millionairess. Isn’t that kind of weird? Heather is right, she’s one of those people that has seemed old forever, even when she wasn’t.

Or maybe I’m old, too, and I’m feeling weird about the fact that I assumed someone who’s the same age as me was at least 20 years older in these photos. And maybe I look a lot older than I think I do, too.

    Also this comment is rambly.

She is heaven. Peppered throughout all my favourites! I love these photos of her!

You might enjoy a very silly Neil Simon movie from ’76 that has her in it, Murder by Death. It’s kind of hilarious (it’s meant to be), but it has the whole cheesy late ’70s vibe too. I saw it twice (!) over the holidays and it was worth it! She is fantastic as always in it – and it’s streaming on Netflix! :)

LOVE Maggie Smith! It was and still is The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie that has glued a place for her in my heart.

  7. Lauren says:

She is so lovely!! I love how she is rocking that fur scarf. So elegant and sophisticated looking. xo

Maggie Smith is a legend… I will always love her from Secret Garden, but maybe my love of that movie biases me. Maggie Smith’s son (and spitting image), Toby Stephens, was fantastic in the Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson!

  9. Jade Sheldon says:

    *Sigh* I just adore her…

  10. Room with a view is one of my favourite films of all time! Helena in that film…her tiny waist and massive hair!

  11. Lis says:

I love her!!! Try “Death on the Nile”…the banter between Dame Maggie and Bette Davis is priceless. She’s also wonderful in “Evil Under the Sun”, but you get more of her razor-sharp wit in “Death on the Nile”. Enjoy!!
