PDX Gallery: Duplex Collective

Although I tend to switch up the Portland galleries I visit each month, there is one that I always attend: Duplex. Having come back to Portland after finishing masters programs and looking to reconnect with Portland’s art community, painter and gallerist, Jessica Breedlove Latham, with painter and designer, Lindsay Jordan Kretchun, founded Duplex Collective early last year. They began with an art and design blog and a gallery space soon followed. So far, my favorite shows have been painter Kristen Flemington’s contemporary take on the Dutch baroque style, and the ‘Bored Girls’ photography series by local photographer Anja Verdugo.

Since its debut last July, Duplex has shown impressive works in diverse mediums such as painting, photography, collage, sculpture, illustration and 3D paper art. Not content to stop there, the Duplex ladies also created an extensive guide to Portland’s art galleries and have been getting involved with other local organizations, such as the Recycled Rain Project and the BCA program. If you’re looking for ways to become involved in Portland’s art scene or opportunities to learn more about what’s going on, Duplex is a great resource. Jessica and Lindsay work to share their passion for art through inclusive art education and promotion.

Whether you’re a seasoned art aficionado or you want to learn about art and don’t know where to start, Portland’s First Thursday gallery walk is a great way to check out Portland’s art scene. This is the evening each month when galleries throughout Downtown, Old Town and the Pearl District hold openings for the month’s new shows. I love the energy from what can often be described as a ‘party atmosphere’, albeit a somewhat intellectual one. Overall, it’s a great opportunity to grab a drink, people watch and keep up on the arts.

Duplex is located in Old Town at 219 NW Couch Street. You can also follow what’s happening on the Duplex blog, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!
