Zinaida Serebriakova
I’ve been really admiring the artwork of Zinaida Serebriakova lately. In particular, I love her portraits of herself, her children, artists, society and royalty. She has an interesting story of being born into privilege in an esteemed Russian (now Ukraine) family of artists, but fell into poverty after the revolution in 1917. Her husband died shortly after and she was left to take care of their four children and other family members. Zinaida left for Paris in 1924 to work on a mural she’d been commissioned to do, but was not allowed back into her country. Only her two youngest children were allowed to be sent to her and she wasn’t able to see her two older children for over twenty years. Her work varies a lot with different techniques, traveling, means to buy supplies and just maturity, I think. Such a strong and interesting lady — she seems to have lived several lives in one. Here are some of my favorite works — everyone has such kind eyes, don’t they? Read more about Zinaida Serebriakova HERE.
