Shop Visit: Via Raiz

This year’s PDX Pop-Up Shop to watch is Vía Raíz. Conceived by Jennifer Bolanos earlier this year, Vía Raíz brings modern Mexican craft to the Northwest and does so beautifully. The Portland Business Alliance started it’s PDX Pop-Up Shops program seven years ago to utilize and find a good purpose for vacant spaces in Old Town and other shopping areas around downtown Portland. It’s a great program that provides opportunities for fledgling retailers to set up shop over the holidays. It has been a very successful retail experiment and past pop-up alums include Bridge & Burn, Boys Fort, and Crafty Wonderland who all have permanent brick and mortar locations today.

Originally from the Bay Area, Jennifer moved to Portland a few years ago after meeting her now husband, a native Portlander. Proud of her Mexican heritage and a fan of design, Jennifer began following brands based in Mexico, like Mexichic and Onora Casa, who were updating traditional Mexican crafts by incorporating modern aesthetics to create pieces that are more minimal in design and color and meld seamlessly into today’s interiors.

Vía Raíz means ‘of roots’ and references the traditions represented in all the goods. Stand outs include Mexican enamelware spoons and mugs produced by a pair of Mexican graphic designers that play with traditional designs in a wholly modern way, Onoroa Casa’s Calavera Huichol (beaded skulls) featuring beautifully intricate geometric patterns, Mexichic’s cozy textiles in neutral color palettes with details like petite pom poms and embroidery, gourmet coffee from Dosis Cafe, handmade fiber statement necklaces from Caralarga, hand carved planters, Portland-made Cocanú chocolates, and the sweetest crocheted Frida Kahlo dolls. I’ve already taken care of a good chunk of my holiday shopping thanks to Vía Raíz and am telling everyone I know to pop in and take a look as there’s really something for everyone.
