One of Portland’s best kept retail secrets is darling SE shop Johan, whose insta-ready hashtag is the cheeky #shhhop. Located in a tiny, but sweet spot tucked away on a mainly residential street just off Hawthorne, the once online-only mecca of minimal Scandi-style has since taken over owner Laura Housgard’s actual living room. Inspired by a stint studying marketing and branding in Sweden and her Scandinavian ancestry, the shop is named after her great-grandfather x 4, Johan August Magnusson, a creative and resourceful character by all accounts.
Once carrying exclusively Swedish goods, Laura has since expanded to include locally made items, such as Ara Handbags, ceramics from Ashley Hardy and Alexandria Cummings, Sea + Pattern jewelry and apothecary from Midnight Collective. Other items on hand include graphic and inspirational stationery, vintage design books and magazines, sunglasses from Swedish brand E&E Eyewear, beautiful raincoats from Stutterheim Stockholm and lots more. Painstakingly considered and artfully displayed, Johan is a real treat for design lovers.
Given Johan’s unorthodox location, hours are currently limited to weekends. An adorable neon sign (made by popular Portland neon studio, The Tiny Spoon) proclaiming ‘yes’ in the front window signals shoppers in the manner of a secret speakeasy, making the experience that much more exciting. While there, do ask Laura about that great-great-great-great-grandfather of hers and be sure to tag your photos of the bright and inspiring space #shhhop.
Johan is located in Portland, Oregon at 1907 SE 12th Avenue and is open Saturday and Sunday, usually from 12PM to 6PM or shop Johan online anytime. For more info about occasional extended hours and special guests (sometimes including giveaways and cocktails!) you can like Johan on Facebook and follow @shopjohan on Instagram.
HAPPY WEEKEND! Have fun out there! I’m looking forward to some rain and getting the house ready for family coming to visit next week. Maybe some rainy day reading and hot tea will happen — so ready for it! xo Jen

I’m very enamored with the new Emerson Fry collection for Fall 2015. She always does an amazing job designing easy, elegant wardrobe staples, but this season is really doing it for me x 100. So much so, I’m even posting photos of coveted hoodies and I usually do not care for sweats. Granted, these are beyond basic sweats and made of jersey linen, but still — sweats and I want that hoodie! Other faves are the Triangle Long Sweater, the amazing jet black Yoshi Sweater (I’d like it in natural and charcoal, too!), the versatile black silk Yoshi Tunic, the stone and black Tie Up Dress (such a good length for fall and winter!), the linen Cocoon Coat in both black and charcoal, the black Ryan Coat (it looks SO GOOD with the Layering Hoodie!!), the beautiful Drop Shoulder Coat in camel. I also love the Trooper Boots and Skater Shoe. Sooooo…. basically everything. Phenomenal collection! More HERE.

A newcomer to Portland’s SE Division Street, Field Trip opened in July and has already settled in perfectly amongst their well-loved neighbors. True to its name, visiting Field Trip feels a bit like a fun and relaxing mini-getaway, one that just happens to be a rad shop. The expansive space features lovely wood floors, a dedicated area for weekly workshops, and even an outdoor patio. I was surprised to hear that Field Trip’s owner, Kara Green, had recently moved back to Portland from New York because this space has a perfectly relaxed vibe that brings to mind surf culture. It works and I found myself wanting to spend the rest of my day just hanging out with their awesome inventory.
Everywhere you look there is something that inspires major want. Clothing, accessories, apothecary and housewares are abundant and cohesively curated. Among the standouts are apparel from minimalist master Ilana Kohn, Moon Juice holistic supplement powders (like the romantic sounding Love Dust!), lots of cool wall hangings and custom-made Field Trip skateboard decks. You’ll also find lots of gorgeous ceramics, textiles, tableware, blankets, great magazines, modern minimal jewelry and natural skincare lines.
As mentioned, Field Trip hosts creative workshops on a weekly basis. Workshoppers can choose from regular Monday night Drink & Draw sessions, Tuesday Kids Crafts, and specialty classes like DIY beauty treatments and block printing. I made my visit on a Tuesday and can vouch for the kids crafting — I spied some major cuties having fun and working hard on their own wall hangings.
Field Trip is located in Portland at 3725 SE Division. Stop by Tuesday through Saturday from 11AM to 7PM and Sundays from 10AM to 5PM. You can also shop select items at Field Trip online. Follow @shopfieldtrip on Instagram to keep current on new arrivals, workshops and more.
YAY! I’ve been really looking forward to the new Elizabeth Suzann collection for fall and now it’s here and it’s beautiful. My new ES favorites are the dreamy bateau neck Eva Sweater, the navy and charcoal Jane Kimonos, the wool gauze Mia Top, the stunning nubby raw silk Lena Turtleneck, the epic layering Linn Sweater, the Louise Sweater (that neckline!) and the perfect camel Cocoon Coat. To be honest, my shop wish list also includes pieces from previous collections like the amazing Italian linen Harper Tunic, every color of the linen Emma Kimono, the silk Georgia Midi dress and, of course, a few more Artist Smocks in my closet wouldn’t hurt. The two pieces that I have from Elizabeth Suzann are things I reach for constantly — they feel like dear friends who make you feel great. I’m counting the days until this heat passes and I can layer some cozy new pieces and wear my Cocoon coat 5 times a week again! P.S. I recommend following @elizsuzann on Instagram! More HERE.
