Happy Friday! We’ve been watching our niece for the past week and, while exhausting, it has been a lot of fun. We have another week of it ahead, but I also hope to squeeze in some more unpacking (YES. We STILL have boxes to get through. Uuuuggggh.) and get a couple of rooms rearranged to make more sense. We’re also going to be getting a fence put in soon — which I know might sound immensely boring to most people, but living on an alley without one has been a bit unnerving. I have dreams of a gorgeous (and incredibly small! ha.) English garden in the backyard, but that might take a while since it is a just a pile of dirt and some concrete right now. Someday. I hope everyone has a lovely weekend! xo Jen

Bon Boutique x Desert Vintage

Speaking of the charm of rustling party dresses, I love the new Bon Boutique and Desert Vintage lookbook. The two wonderful Tuscon-based shops collaborated on a shoot with photographer Krysta Jabczenski to feature their vintage sombreros, colorful vintage tulle skirts, Repetto ballet flats, Mung Javen tees, Levi’s Vintage Collection tees, Pip Squeak Chapeau skirts and shirts, Makié dresses and vintage jewels against a backdrop of beautiful colors in Barrio Viejo. I bet that was a fun day! More HERE and HERE.

Custard Heart Vintage

I love Maria’s little shop Custard Heart Vintage. She has a bunch of cute dresses right now and I picked a few below that I thought would be fun for getting dolled up on Valentine’s Day. I love the idea of just going all out in a rustling, glamorous pink dress. I found some dreamy sweaters and I’m in love with the tailored jacket in the first photograph. I. Magnin is one of my favorite labels for vintage because everything is always beautifully made and I have fond memories of shopping with my grandmother at the Seattle department store in the 1980s. It’s also nice that Maria always has lovely things for ladies in both hemispheres! More HERE.

Beauty Report: Velvet Lips

Wonderful cruelty-free, natural makeup brand, Alima Pure, just launched a collection of six dreamy Velvet Lipstick shades. My friends at the Portland-based company sent me a set of samples over the holidays and I’ve been enjoying testing them each out — Beatrice (a deep merlot), Georgia (a vibrant raspberry), Emma (a neutral flushed pink), Lucy (a creamy rosy nude), Iris (an earthy muted red) and Stella (a bold garnet).

My personal favorite is definitely Stella — a classic 1940s brick red. It’s a blue-based true red, but there are some coral tones that soften it and, I feel, make it a shade that would also look good on people who lean towards orange-y reds. So pretty! I also love Beatrice and Iris — I think both are pretty universally flattering. Some people shy away from a bold, wine-colored lip and I think Beatrice would be a good one for taking the leap because it’s a little more sheer and you can control how dark you want it to go. Iris is just a good muted red — that looks really soft and understated. Another favorite is Lucy — a color that I personally don’t look good in, but it’s one that I’ve always wished worked on me! It’s a light, soft color that would be amazing paired with a bold 1960s cat eye eyeliner or smokey eye. More HERE.

Shop Visit: Oblation Papers & Press

Located in Portland’s vibrant Pearl District, Oblation Papers & Press is a gem of a shop — a veritable wonderland for those who appreciate paper goods. Starting out in 1989 with a line of papers handmade using local plants and recycled fibers, owners Ron and Jennifer Rich began working with a 19th century printing press to create custom letterpress wedding invitations. They opened their current location in 1998 and continue to offer custom invitations and announcements via their print shop, urban paper mill, and retail shop. Oblation has a huge selection of artful cards, stationery, paper, ephemera and specialized items such as Italian correspondence cards, French wax seals, fountain pens, photo albums and journals. They even stock raw materials for bookbinding and office supplies.

The large, well-stocked retail space is warm and inviting with lots of historical charm. Upon entering, you’ll immediately find a huge selection of greeting cards covering all occasions, including: congratulations, well wishing, birthdays, engagements, anniversaries, thank you, holidays and everything in between. There are wonderful cards from local makers, such as Old School Stationers, national favorites, like Snow & Graham and Oblation’s own designs. Peppered throughout the space you’ll also find journals, pens, and small gifts such as books and handmade soaps. There is also a party section with place cards, coasters, invitations, cookbooks and other lovely things for your even or as great hostess gifts.

Heading to the other side of Oblation, you’ll find a large selection of fine paper, wrapping paper, more journals, books, and cards, and the Wrapping Bar where you can pick up all manner of fun items to help you create the perfect package. This side of the space is also where you can catch a glimpse of the impressive printing press in action! Oblation’s amazing staff is always available to consult regarding any custom printing needs you may have. Really though, one doesn’t have to need something particular to visit — you’ll either find something you didn’t know you needed or else just thoroughly enjoy perusing their amazing merchandise.

Oblation is located at 516 NW 12th Avenue and is open Monday through Saturday from 10AM–6PM and Sunday from 12PM–5PM. Follow Oblation Papers & Press on Facebook AND you can shop online.
